How to scan QR codes

On every phone, computer and browser

Most phones scan QR codes with the camera app, but computers, older phones and screenshots each need a different approach. The guides below cover every common device, and each page has a scanner that reads codes in your browser — from the camera or an image — without uploading anything.

Do I need an app to scan a QR code?

No modern phone needs a separate app: iPhones have scanned QR codes through the built-in Camera app since iOS 11, and most Android phones do the same natively or through Google Lens. An app becomes useful mainly for scanning a saved image or a webcam feed on a computer, which a browser-based scanner also handles with no install.

Why won't my phone scan a QR code?

The most common causes are poor lighting, a code printed too small for the scanning distance, low contrast between the pattern and its background, or a camera held too close or at too sharp an angle. Stepping back, improving the light, or switching to a browser scanner that reads an uploaded photo instead of a live camera usually resolves it.

Can a QR code be scanned from a screenshot or a photo instead of a live camera?

Yes. Upload the image to a browser-based scanner, such as MakeQR's, and it decodes the pattern directly from the file rather than a live camera feed. This works for a code buried in an email, a PDF page, or a photo taken earlier, situations where no camera can point directly at the original printed code.

Is it safe to scan a QR code from an unknown source?

A QR code itself cannot install malware; scanning only decodes it into a link, contact card or block of text that still requires a tap to open. The risk is the same as clicking an unfamiliar link: check the destination address a scanner shows before opening it, and watch for a code stuck over another one on a public poster or parking meter.
