Some moments call for dialling right now, not saving a contact for later: a breakdown sticker on a guardrail, a refund line taped to a vending machine, a maintenance tag on a piece of equipment. Scanning the QR code opens the phone's own dialler with the number already entered, one tap away from the call.
The phone still requires that tap; nothing dials on its own, and nothing gets saved to the address book the way a contact card would. Enter the number with its country code and MakeQR builds the pattern free, in the browser, with no account, working the same on iPhone and Android.
Making a phone number QR code
Enter the number with its country code
Write it as +1 415 555 1234 rather than a local format. Anyone scanning from outside the immediate area needs the country code to reach the right line.
Use digits and a plus sign only
Skip parentheses and dashes around the area code. MakeQR removes spaces automatically, but leftover punctuation can confuse the dialer on some phones.
Preview and call it from your own phone
Scan the code before printing and check that the dialer shows the full number correctly, with the right country code and no stray characters.
Download for the material it goes on
SVG for vinyl decals and signage that will be resized, PNG for a printed sticker or label at a fixed size.
What happens on the phone that scans it
The camera or a scanning app recognizes the number and offers to call it, or opens the dialer with the digits already entered. Either way, a person still has to tap call; the code cannot start a call by itself. This is intentional in how phones handle the format, not a limitation of the code.
A phone number code or a contact card
Use a phone number code when the next step is calling immediately, such as a roadside assistance sticker on a vehicle. Use a contact card instead when people are likely to want to reach you again later, since a contact card saves the name and number to the address book but does not open the dialer directly.
Formatting mistakes that break the call
The number goes into the code exactly as typed, aside from spaces, which MakeQR strips automatically. Parentheses, dashes and extensions typed as text after the number are left in place and can cause some dialers to show the number oddly or fail to recognize it as a callable number. Enter only digits with a leading plus and country code, and if a call needs to reach a specific extension, put the extension in a nearby printed line rather than inside the code.
What the code contains
A tel link with the number, nothing else. No name, no message and no data sent anywhere; the phone reads the number and opens its own dialer, the same as tapping a phone number in a text message.
tel:+14155551234Where a phone number code is used
Vehicle decals, vending machine refund stickers, equipment maintenance tags and roadside signage all work. A decal read from a few meters, such as on the side of a van, needs about 60 mm; a small equipment tag read up close works at 20 mm.
Print it at least 20 mm (2.0 cm) wide
Why a phone number code fails to dial
No country code
A local-format number often works for someone dialing from nearby but fails or dials the wrong place for a visitor from another country. Always write the number with its country code.
Dashes or parentheses left in the number
MakeQR removes spaces automatically but not other punctuation. A number entered as (415) 555-1234 can confuse a dialer that expects plain digits after the country code.
Using it where a contact card would serve better
A phone code only dials; it saves nothing. If people are meant to reach you again later, a contact card that saves your details is the better fit.
Static or dynamic for a phone number code
The number is written directly into the pattern, so this code is static by nature: free, permanent and impossible to redirect after printing.
If the number is likely to change, such as a support line that might move to a new system, point a dynamic code at a contact page on your website instead and update the number there. That needs a free account, and two dynamic codes are free forever.
How dynamic QR codes workPhone number codes on vehicles, machines and doors
- A roadside assistance sticker on a fleet vehicle opens the dispatch line.
- A vending machine label opens a call to the refund and service number.
- An equipment tag opens a call to the maintenance hotline for that machine.
- A rental property's welcome folder opens a call to the property manager.
